As UVA Children’s was looking to expand Pediatric services beyond the main hospital, HCM was the design partner to plan the future expansion of Primary and Specialty Care. The goal of the project was to establish an outpatient hub centered in the community for comprehensive clinic care for the growing Charlottesville population.
The center is divided into four distinct environments under one roof but with dedicated entrances and flows. Included in the program:
Primary Care Clinic, allowing for expanded services and same day servicing, including labs
Specialty Care Clinic, dedicated to pediatric subspecialists and the required programs for services such as ENT, Endocrinology, and Psychology
Teen Health Clinic, as a focused space for those outside of traditional pediatric practices but still not a part of adult primary care and focusing on the nuances of the adolescent
Neurodevelopmental and Behavioral Health Center, focused in a specialized care environment for the emotional, behavioral, and developmental needs of the population.
The Riverside Center has allowed for a tremendous growth opportunity for clinical care to extend reach in a less stressful and more accessible environment. In particular, catering to patients and families with neurodevelopmental concerns, the new space has scaled the patient experience to an appropriate amount of stimuli and touch points to provide a direct line of care. From arrival to treatment, the new center is catered to the individual with specialty treatment spaces for the whole person with enough adaptability for the future of pediatric care environments.
In addition to the examination spaces, additional care was given to scalable consultative spaces able to address individual, family, and even group therapies while also dignifying the privacy of those seeking care. Examples of these spaces include a group therapy room for eating disorders group dining, family therapy rooms, and even specialized evaluation spaces for Parent-Child Interactive Therapy. Though the use of technology, spaces are designed to allow for a discrete patient experience that also allows a teaching environment for the next generation of providers.
The completed complex has allowed UVA Children’s to expand the reach of patient care while also offering a state of the art care facility to focus on the next generations of patient and family treatment and care.
